Did You Know?!
For every choking-related death, an estimated 110 children are treated in hospital emergency departments for non-fatal choking.[Ref:43]
In “Field of Dreams” (released by Universal Studios in 1989), Dr. Archie “Moonlight” Graham saves Karin, the young girl who is choking on a hot dog after falling from the bleachers. Dr. Graham uses two gentle back blows to dislodge the hot dog.
Currently, gentle back blows are considered the correct initial treatment for infants and preteens who have complete airway obstruction from a foreign body. (Abdominal thrusts are currently considered the correct initial treatment only for adults who have complete airway obstruction from a foreign body).
As a historical footnote, the real-life “Doc” Graham died in 1965, well before the introduction of the “classic” abdominal-thrust Heimlich maneuver in the 1970’s.
